Labor calls for cost-of-living, no cuts, no broken promises in LNP’s delayed mid-year Budget

  • LNP Crisafulli Government’s mid-year budget must not cut critical cost-of-living support, infrastructure projects and services

  • Labor is calling for more cost-of-living support to help Queensland families

The LNP must guarantee Queenslanders its delayed mid-year Budget will break no promises, feature no cuts and continue vital cost-of-living support, Labor says.

After failing to provide the mid-year fiscal and economic review in December when it’s traditionally handed down, David Crisafulli’s newly-minted, rarely-seen Treasurer David Janetzki is tomorrow expected to front media and reveal what exactly took him two months to pull together.

Deputy Opposition Leader Cameron Dick says it’s a chance for both Davids to finally keep to their word – a chance they’re both likely fail.

The LNP government has promised to deliver projects on-time and on-budget with no new taxes, no cuts, no more consultants and no more borrowing.

Since the election, however David Crisafulli has already broken promises by axing projects like the Townsville University Hospital Expansion, mould rectification at the Prince Charles Hospital, schemes to attract regional health workers and last week hiring external consultants to do a review into possible cuts to satellite hospitals.

They’ve also indicated further cuts with reviews for Domestic and Family Violence Services, major health infrastructure projects and revelations that hardworking homelessness organisations are set to be short-changed by $45 million.

That’s despite the latest Queensland Audit Office report highlighting the need for governments to continue the Miles Labor Government’s legacy of record investment in health, housing transport, roads and energy infrastructure.

Deputy Opposition Leader Cameron Dick says after David Janetzki’s long beach break, it’s time for the Treasurer to get rid of the sand between his toes and come clean on his cuts.

Quotes attributable to Deputy Opposition Leader Cameron Dick:

“Families and Queenslanders are right now preparing for the new year, balancing their own household budgets – and they need certainty that the government is 100 per cent behind them and will provide vital cost-of-living relief.

“We’re calling on David Janetzki to do his job, prepare a mid-year budget too, and give families the help they need.

“We’re also calling on him to make sure there are no cuts to vital infrastructure and services across our state.

“The LNP’s refusal to tell Queenslanders anything about the mid-year Budget until they were forced into providing a date last week shows that they’re up to something.

“That, or David Janetzki has just spent weeks doing nothing, being more of a tease than the will-they, won’t-they of Scully and Mulder in X-Files.

“The reality is, the Davids cannot deliver on their election promises without breaking their other promises of no cuts, no new taxes and no borrowing.”

Quotes attributable to Shadow Treasurer Shannon Fentiman:

“It’s no surprise the Crisafulli LNP government have been afraid to face the music and provide a mid-year Budget update, because the reality is more broken promises for Queenslanders.

“For the last two months, the LNP have been laying the groundwork for cuts - or in David Janetzki’s case laying on the beach. We’ve seen it with regional health employment and homelessness programs.

“Tomorrow, David Janetzki needs to put Queenslanders instead of the interests of the LNP first. Provide families doing it tough with the cost of living the support, services and infrastructure they need as they prepare for the year ahead.”
