Construction at standstill, tradies sacked after LNP Government halts Redcliffe Hospital expansion
Comes as whistleblowers reveal health projects under threat including cancer centre and new Bundaberg Hospital
A number of projects remain in the firing line as LNP looks to slash $6 billion from health system
Tradies have been let go and machinery has been shipped out after the LNP ordered work stop on the Redcliffe Hospital expansion.
The site of construction was empty today with the opposition learning crews and contractors were told key works like piling and demolition would be deferred.
It comes as the Crisafulli LNP Government orders a review into Labor’s multi-billion dollar health big build, which includes a major expansion to the Redcliffe Hospital alongside new builds and expansions right throughout the Sunshine State.
That review is yet to be released to Queenslanders, with the government keeping secret what projects will be cut.
Whistleblowers have revealed however that in addition to the Redcliffe Hospital’s expansion, major health projects like the Queensland Cancer Centre could be delayed to 2031 while builds like the new Bundaberg Hospital are being downscaled and re-scoped.
Opposition Leader Steven Miles met with Bob, one of the workers who had been sacked, and said the LNP had betrayed Queenslanders by breaking promises, sacking workers and downing tools on major health projects.
Quotes attributable to Opposition Leader Steven Miles:
“David Crisafulli said when he says something, he means it.
“During the election, he said they would honour Labor’s commitment to add a further 2,200 beds by 2028.
“Now, the man he’s tasked with the health portfolio has admitted they won’t deliver on that commitment, all while sacking workers and forcing companies to put tools down.
“It’s another day and another broken promise from the Premier whose words mean nothing.
“Multi-billion dollar stadiums can’t come at the expense of basic healthcare.”
Quotes attributable to Member for Bancroft Chris Whiting:
“It’s not just people who use Redcliffe Hospital who lose out, it’s local workers and businesses too.
“Workers have contacted me to say how they have been made redundant. I have seen the letters.
“They told me about the financial commitments they made when they started the job – houses, cars, kids’ schools – and how these things are now at risk.
“For some, it was going to be their last job before retirement.”
Quotes attributable to Member for Sandgate Bisma Asif:
“Healthcare is a fundamental responsibility for a state government, but the LNP have shirked that responsibility.
“Thousands of people from my community have used this hospital and been treated by the amazing doctors and nurses over the years – whether that’s for their most challenging of times in life, or their most joyous.
“Thousands more will use it in years’ to come. They don’t deserve to have the rug pulled from under them and have important projects like this cancelled.”
